As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: “Whatever your life’s work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.”
How high are your personal standards? Born on a Southern plantation in 1919, Eugene Allen was a man of great dignity despite the mental and physical atrocities he had to face in pre-civil rights America. He paid such attention to detail as a waiter that he was recruited to join the White House staff. He started as a “pantry man,” washing dishes, stocking cabinets and shining silverware for $2,400 a year, and then rose through the ranks becoming the maitre d’, or top butler, serving under eight presidents. Even as race relations were changing and his job may have seemed demeaning to other Blacks, he took immense pride in his work. He never missed a day in 34 years and was known for being “a professional in all he did.” His life story inspired the movie, The Butler. No matter what the task at hand, strive for excellence. Whether you are the boss or part of the supporting cast, always give your best. Every action you take represents who you are. Deliver quality and you will reap success and a deep sense of fulfillment.
