As President Bill Clinton said, “We must teach our children to resolve their conflicts with words, not weapons.”

How do you resolve conflict? I was recently at the Sedona Yoga Festival and moderated a program that showcased the work of Rama Jyoti Vernon. She is a yoga teacher who has organized over 200 Soviet-American Citizens’ Summits and has led conferences in places like The West Bank. As an activist, she has dedicated her life to promoting peace and establishing stronger international relations through dialogue. Now, more than ever, we need to use words, not weapons. You don’t have to travel to a war zone to be what Rama calls a “citizen-diplomat.” Model the behavior of compassion every day. Tune into breath to create an inner atmosphere of calm. Develop a reflective practice to deepen self-awareness. If you have a disagreement or argument, don’t lash out. Try to understand the other person’s perspective and be willing to compromise. Cultivate a repertoire of language that is non-threatening. Seek nonviolence in your thoughts, words and actions, particularly around young people, and you will contribute to creating a more peaceful world.

Until next time, remember-it’s your divine life, live it to the fullest. The power is in your hands!

With Purpose & Power,

Terri
