Listen to this week’s message:
As French fashion icon Coco Chanel said, “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”
What makes you stand out? Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel grew up poor. Her mother, who was a laundrywoman, died when she was 12, and her street-peddler father sent his three daughters to live in a convent that housed orphaned girls. The nuns taught Gabrielle how to sew. After a short career as a singer, “Coco” opened a hat shop financed by her wealthy lover. Refusing to accept the hourglass corset “uniform” of the day, she then introduced a more boyish casual clothing style for women using men’s fabrics and influences. It was both chic and liberating. She made the sports clothes she favored fashionable, and went on to innovate in many other areas from the Chanel No. 5 fragrance to the timeless Chanel suit and the “little black dress.” With rebel ambition and unabashed self-expression, she went from rags to riches revolutionizing fashion and becoming one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Like Coco Chanel, always be different. Embrace what makes you unique. Give a new perspective. Put your full authentic face forward. Be unforgettable by showing the world something it’s never seen before. Instead of trying to conform by being one-of-the-same, seek to stand out by being one-of-a-kind.
Until next time, remember – it’s your divine life, live it to the fullest. The power is in your hands!
