An Eskimo Proverb says: “Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.”
How do you honor loved ones no longer here? Every year, leading to the anniversary of losing my dad, I reflect upon the mystery of spirit and power of love. What really happens when someone leaves this plane? All I know is that I still feel my father’s presence in the house I grew up in – the same house he died in. I feel his unconditional love surrounding me. When I have a decision to make, I sometimes ask for his guidance. He doesn’t speak to me verbally, but somehow I receive the answer. I like to believe that the Eskimos had it right – that love is a connective tissue that binds us regardless of time and space. So, if you’ve ever lost anyone, smile at a star. Witness nature demonstrating a power that is so much greater than you and me. Look around and see your loved one’s imprint on your life. Know that, even if the person is not physically here, his or her spirit lives in your memory and your heart.
