August 7, 2016–Although August 13th is Yoga Master Tao Porchon-Lynch’s actual birth date, on Sunday there was a grand bash at the Taj Palace Restaurant in White Plains, New York to celebrate her 98th! Tao’s extended family of friends and colleagues from her various walks of life — such as yoga, dance and wine — were all there. It’s a testament to how you can create your own community of love regardless of whether you have blood relatives who are present (or you want around).
Tao looked gorgeous in her exquisite shawl, slinky purple dress and heels to match. As usual, there was delicious Indian food, lots of hugs and dancing galore. There was even a South Korean television crew filming for a special on Tao. Tao’s beloved dance partners were there, including Vard Margaryan and Anton Bilozorov. Hayk Balasanyan didn’t make it from the West Coast and was surely missed.
Famed dancer and choreographer Sandip Soparrkar traveled all the way from India to surprise Tao. She was delighted like a child on Christmas morning when he walked in the door! Tao and Sandip danced together in Mumbai to a crowd of over 5,000 people in January 2014. In December 2015, Sandip hosted a large party in Mumbai for the launch of her autobiography (which I co-wrote with my mom), Dancing Light: The Spiritual Side of Being Through the Eyes of a Modern Yoga Master.
It was fun to see Tao on the dance floor with Vard, Anton and Sandip. She truly is an example of the potential in each of us — that we can shine our light bright regardless of age.
