Newark Peace Education Summit

The Dalai Lama at the Newark Peace Education Summit

THE BUZZ: From May 13-15, 2011, I attended the Newark Peace Education Summit. It was a three-day conference focusing on peacemaking practices from around the world. It featured panels and workshops with His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Somaly Mam, Nobel Laureates and peace advocates from a wide cross section of cultures, disciplines and perspectives.

It was an impressive gathering of light! Deepak Chopra offered a workshop on “The Neuroscience of Enlightenment,” Marianne Williamson offered a talk on “Inner Peace Outer Peace” and Donna Karan spoke on “Where Commerce Meets Philanthropy.” I saw some fellow Young Global Leaders there, including Cameron Sinclair (Architecture for Humanity) and Zainab Salbi (Women for Women International). Nobel Laureate Jody Williams was on fire!

My dear 92-year-old yoga teacher, Tao Porchon-Lynch, was on a panel with His Holiness and also co-presented a workshop with me on “The Gandhi Effect: Transform Yourself and the World Around You”. It was tremendous – particularly since Tao met and marched with Gandhi. It was a blend of information, inspiration and practical tools. The workshop was so well-received, Tao and I have decided to take it on the road to other events!
