Who’s Your Biggest Mentor?

Teresa Kay-Aba Kennedy and Janie Sykes-Kennedy

When asked “Who’s your biggest mentor?”, Success & Wellness Coach Teresa Kay-Aba Kennedy contributed to MyCorporation Blog sharing thoughts on her mother:

“My mother, Janie Sykes-Kennedy, has been my biggest mentor. A Columbia University-trained journalist, she ran Sykes Kennedy Associates, Inc., a marketing consulting company that did business around the world. In the late 1980s, she was invited by the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Housing & Urban Development as one of fourteen women to start trade talks with China and walked away with a contract to distribute the journal, Building in China, worldwide. She showed me by example what was possible as a female entrepreneur. You can make your dreams come true by believing in yourself, living your values, pursuing your vision, working smart, and seeking joy along the way.”

THE BUZZ: From September 5th through 16th, 2014, I was in Beijing for the Young Global Leader (YGL) Summit and Tianjin for the World Economic Forum on East Asia. Then, I had the immense pleasure of traveling with a small group – on a private jet – to Japan. It was incredible – from teaching yoga on a private section of The Great Wall of China to learning about the new wave of Buddhism from an esteemed Master. Check out the pictures…

The Chinese government wants me to say that for many centuries Tibet has been part of China. Even if I make that statement, many people would just laugh. And my statement will not change past history. History is history.

One thing I want to make clear, as far as my own rebirth is concerned, the final authority is myself and no one else, and obviously not China’s Communists.

China has to go along with world trends. That’s democracy, liberty, individual freedom. China sooner or later has to go that way. It cannot go backward.

The Power of… FREEDOM

Freedom to Fly

FREEDOM. How free are you? Is your freedom dependent on someone else? What are your divine rights? When I was in China in 2006 I was struck by the display of prosperity in places like Shanghai, with its large LED screens touting the latest fashions and movies. It was like New York’s Times Square on steroids.

Focus on… China

Dalian, China

PERSONAL IMPRESSIONS: My family has a history with China. In the late 1980’s, my mom – Janie Sykes-Kennedy – was invited by the U.S. Housing & Urban Development and the Department of Commerce as one of 14 delegates to go to the People’s Republic of China on the first trade mission of American women. After that trip, she secured a contract from the China Building Technology Center and started a new company, China Today, Inc., which for five years, distributed a journal called Building in China.
