An Ordinary Day

IMPRESSIONS:

I lived in Ground Zero on 9/11.
For some reason this photo I recently took reminds me of that day.
Maybe it’s the eerie glow on the buildings or the blue-grey sky.
This is what came to mind about that day:

It was an ordinary day… and then it wasn’t.
I was going to return something in the mall under the towers.
Instead, I slept in.
My mom had convinced me that I deserved a break.
I listened.

It was an ordinary day… and then it wasn’t.
The clock rings. It’s 8:45am.
I hear construction outside – or so it seems.
The phone rings. The voice on the other end says, “Turn on the TV.”
I did.

It was an ordinary day… and then it wasn’t.
Something is happening three blocks away.
A plane hits a building.
I call my mother. She says, “Get out!”
I leave.

It was an ordinary day… and then it wasn’t.
The sky was beautiful – a clear blue.
Then it turned grey – an unnatural haze.
A cloud of debris came toward us. Some looked.
I ran.

It was an ordinary day… and then it wasn’t.
Going to work. Going to shop. Going to eat.
Thousands of lives changed in an instant.
We witnessed.
We mourned.

It was an ordinary day… then it wasn’t.
Make THIS ordinary day, extraordinary
because you don’t know if it will be your last.
