IMPRESSIONS:
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:31
Eagles are often used as examples of strength.
They have large powerful builds and keen vision.
They are able to fly higher than any other bird,
and even soar without actually flapping their wings.
Eagles are bold and tenacious flying into storms
using the wind to lift them to greater heights.
Eagles never eat dead meat.
They hunt for and kill their own food.
They tend to fly alone and live on higher ground.
They are majestic, with an air of royalty.
Pigeons, on the other hand, are often called “flying rats.”
They have short necks, small heads and short legs.
They are dirty. They dig in the garbage and leave their droppings everywhere.
They’re undiscerning and build nests wherever they can find a ledge.
They’re considered urban pests and get no respect.
Yet, in earlier days, pigeons were courier birds delivering important messages,
dodging eagles and hawks to reach their goal.
I took this picture while walking down the street in Manhattan.
It made me think of all the people who feel like pigeons in their own lives -
scraping to get by, allowing life to step on their dreams and dampen their self-esteem.
We all need something to aspire to… even pigeons can dream,
having a vision of flying higher, reaching their true potential,
being regal, sitting above on top of an eagle.
